Challenge

Driving through work zones can be risky—not just for drivers, but also for passengers and road crews. Accidents in these areas often happen because drivers may not recognize hazards in time or fail to adjust their behavior to match the changing conditions. This module was created to help drivers become more aware of their surroundings and make safer decisions in real time.

Solution

This e-learning module, developed in Articulate Storyline 360, offers a hands-on way for learners to build safer driving habits. Instead of just reading safety tips, users move through interactive, real-world scenarios—spotting hazards, choosing how to respond, and learning from immediate feedback. From identifying risks to deciding what to do next, learners stay actively involved every step of the way.

Design Approach

The course uses scenario-based learning to create a realistic and engaging experience that encourages behavior change. Design elements include:

  • Interactive hotspots to help learners identify hidden or potential hazards

  • Realistic scenario questions requiring in-the-moment decision making

  • Variables and branching logic to adapt the experience based on learner choices

  • Layered feedback that reinforces correct decisions and supports improvement

  • Encouraging messages to reinforce safe choices and build learner confidence

  • Visual elements were created in Canva.

Impact

This module is designed with real-world use in mind, especially for organizations involved in transportation safety, fleet training, or public works education. While compact in scope, it offers a practical, interactive way for drivers to build awareness of common work zone risks and practice safer decision-making in a controlled setting.
